Coming up with a marketing strategy for your business can be a big challenge for small businesses. We need a lot of help when conceptualizing and preparing our efforts to put our brand out there. One way that really helps us build a good strategy is to look at studies. “Numbers don’t lie,” they say.
Well, I recently came across this gold mine of a research piece from Australian Marketing Agency Sensis who interviewed about 1,900 Australians to come up with some compelling results.
The report showed a lot such as the platforms Australians use, what they use it for, what devices they login from. But what I want to really focus on are statistics that we mostly miss out on.
There’s No Place Like Home
The number that caught my attention most is 96 percent. That’s how many users access Social Media At home. This sounds like a no brainer, but if you really stop and think about it many of us don’t make marketing efforts to keep this in mind.

Much of our social media marketing opportunities come when people are lounging in their houses. Not at lunch, not in the work place, not in the mall, not even on their commute. So what do you make of that? Here are four thoughts I want to share on how this should affect our marketing efforts.
1. Focus On Social!
Sensis also says that 41 percent of people look at their phone screens more than TV screens when watching TV and accessing social media at the same time. Think about this. Companies are spending thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars to get an ad out on TV.
But every time their crazy expensive ad comes up, people just look at their phones! That tells us a lot about where our money should be going when trying to reach people at home. Social Media is now becoming the new living room staple and is slowly overtaking the big box in the middle of the room.
2. Make Your Marketing Message Light
Here’s another number: 84 percent. That’s how many people browse social media from the living room. People stay at living rooms to relax and unwind. What that tells us is that people want to see light messages when browsing through social. Make sure your messaging and content fits that ambiance.
3. Become a Household Brand
There’s no covering that the best way to market to someone is to target the home. Building messaging around the values of home, family and closely knit relationships is key to a strong marketing strategy. That’s why every brand should be striving to be a household name- something parents, siblings, flatmates and friends can talk about from the comfort of the home.
4. Schedule Out Posts In The Evening
Unless you’re a business to business brand, the smartest thing for you to do is schedule out your social media posts in the evening. Why? 71 percent of users access social media in the evening. And 39 percent say flipping through news feeds is the last thing before they go to bed.
If you want maximum visibility, always have content being pushed out in the evenings- even the latest hours as well. That’s when people are most busy on their phones.
